  • Digi&Mind: Development and validation of a multi-domain digital cognitive stimulation program for older adults with cognitive decline

    Older adults present a decline on their cognitive function. Digital cognitive interventions are related to the maintenance of cognitive function and are associated with better health-related outcomes. This study aims to describe the development process of a multi-domain digital cognitive stimulation program for older adults with cognitive decline. The digital program was developed in four phases: preliminary phase (conceptualization), modeling (experts panel), field test (usability tests), and consensus conference. To ensure software suitability the development process followed also software guidelines for mobile and web applications for older adults. The result was the Digi&Mind digital platform made of a mobile application a backoffice web application. The backoffice web application usability test was conducted with 7 healthcare professionals through the Post-Study System Usability Questionnaire System (PSSUQ). The mobile application test was conducted with 4 older adults and 7 professionals through direct observation user testing. Healthcare professionals considered that the system, the information and the interface had quality. Older adults considered the mobile application as appropriate, useful and easy to use, despite of their low digital experience.

  • Help2CARE - Towards a digital platform to help to care for dependent persons and caregivers

    Nowadays, the training of caregivers and patients in self-care is performed in a health professional-to-patient/caregiver oral communication during consultation or discharge from the hospital, which leads to a limited knowledge retention rate either by caregivers and patients in self-care. The Help2CARE project aims to reduce the high rate of readmissions of patients in hospitals due to the lack of training of their informal caregivers. Therefore, we propose to train these caregivers/self-care patients through the provision of training materials that can increase the level of care provided. For this purpose, we present in this paper the Help2CARE digital platform, consisting of a web application and a mobile application that communicate with each other, which enables training materials to be available to caregivers (according to their patients’ needs of care) in a mobile application. With the web application, it is possible for a health professional to manage caregivers and materials to be made available to them, in order to enable those caregivers to access them through the mobile application, among other features, which enables health professionals to accomplish a closer monitoring of the caregivers under their guidance.

  • Inflammatory Biomarkers in Diabetic Macular Edema

    Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a major complication of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T1DM and T2DM). Disease progression can result in visual impairment, primarily due to diabetic macular edema (DME) or proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Although several ocular treatments are available for DME, a subset of patients fails to respond, reflecting the multifactorial, complex, and systemic nature of DR. Inflammatory biomarkers can be classified according to different characteristics, including imaging biomarkers—most commonly assessed using optical coherence tomography (OCT)—and molecular biomarkers, which are defined by their biochemical and biophysical properties. Pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, adipokines, and inflammation-related enzymes are recognized as key inflammatory biomarkers and can be detected in the vitreous humour, aqueous humour, tears, serum, and other biological tissues. The identification and characterization of reliable biomarkers may help determine disease severity, monitor disease progression, and predict the risk of specific outcomes, thereby aiding in the prevention of end-stage disease (prognostic biomarkers). In addition, biomarkers may serve as predictive tools for therapeutic response, guiding personalized treatment strategies and enabling ongoing monitoring. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the role of inflammatory biomarkers in the diagnosis and management of DR and DME.
