- Complexity Analysis of a Business Process Automation: Case Study on a Healthcare OrganizationPublication . Martinho, Ricardo; Rijo, Rui Pedro Charters Lopes; Nunes, AnaHealthcare organizations have been struggling to get Business Process Management (BPM) and associated Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) properly aligned to improve their patients' service and quality of care. Nevertheless, the highly structured nature of larger organizations such as hospitals hampers this alignment, and commonly ICT is applied to isolated tasks or fragments of processes. In this paper, we present and discuss the results, in terms of complexity, of the introduction of a new scheduling system within the medical appointment and exam business processes of a large hospital. During the case study, we began by modelling the processes using the Business Process Modelling and Notation (BPMN) standard. We then used abstract metrics to compare the complexity between old (before the introduction of the scheduling system) and new processes, and interpreted the obtained results. Finally, we derived important conclusions that will help guide us in further business process optimization endeavors.
- Development of CART model for prediction of tuberculosis treatment loss to follow up in the state of São Paulo, Brazil: A case–control studyPublication . Yamaguti, Verena Hokino; Alves, Domingos; Rijo, Rui Pedro Charters Lopes; Miyoshi, Newton Shydeo Brandão; Ruffino-Netto, AntônioBackground: Tuberculosis is the leading cause of infectious disease-related death, surpassing even the immunodeficiency virus. Treatment loss to follow up and irregular medication use contribute to persistent morbidity and mortality. This increases bacillus drug resistance and has a negative impact on disease control. Objective: This study aims to develop a computational model that predicts the loss to follow up treatment in tuberculosis patients, thereby increasing treatment adherence and cure, reducing efforts regarding treatment relapses and decreasing disease spread. Methods: This is a case-controlled study. Included in the data set were 103,846 tuberculosis cases from the state of São Paulo. They were collected using the TBWEB, an information system used as a tuberculosis treatment monitor, containing samples from 2006 to 2016. This set was later resampled into 6 segments with a 1-1 ratio. This ratio was used to avoid any bias during the model construction. Results: The Classification and Regression Trees were used as the prediction model. Training and test sets accounted for 70% in the former and 30% in the latter of the tuberculosis cases. The model displayed an accuracy of 0.76, F-measure of 0.77, sensitivity of 0.80 and specificity of 0.71. The model emphasizes the relationship between several variables that had been identified in previous studies as related to patient cure or loss to follow up treatment in tuberculosis patients. Conclusion: It was possible to construct a predictive model for loss to follow up treatment in tuberculosis patients using Classification and Regression Trees. Although the fact that the ideal predictive ability was not achieved, it seems reasonable to propose the use of Classification and Regression Trees models to predict likelihood of treatment follow up to support healthcare professionals in minimising the loss to follow up.
- Establishment of Access Levels for Health Sensitive Data Exchange through Semantic WebPublication . Lima, Vinicius Costa; Alves, Domingos; Pellison, Felipe Carvalho; Yoshiura, Vinicius Tohoru; Crepaldi, Nathalia Yukie; Rijo, Rui Pedro Charters LopesData exchange in health information systems must be carefully planned and needs to be protected from unauthorized access due to sensibility of stored content. Security aspects like authentication, authorization and encryption must be considered in this context. The main goal of this article is to present the implementation of security mechanisms to a semantic API that allows data extraction from a regional health information system designed to create notifications and to follow patients diagnosed with Tuberculosis. Data semantically tagged will be mapped individually to several access levels. It will be showed how external systems can connect, authenticate and retrieve only authorized data that are classified in the scope of its maximum access level.
- A New Approach for Schematics for Public Transport Spider MapsPublication . Ribeiro, João Tiago; Rijo, Rui Pedro Charters Lopes; Leal, AntónioThis research aims to create a new approach for spider maps production that results in a fast and automatic method having as input only network location data. Schematization task is commonly done by hand or by purely graphics software. This is a difficult and time consuming task that also needs a skilled map designer, which results in an expensive outcome. A configurable force-directed algorithm allows fast creation of eyepleasing schematic maps, avoiding labor-intensive manual arrangement. In the other hand, different sets of design rules and constraints may be used to quickly generate alternatives, and allow the configuration of a distinctive graphic style. This document presents some of the rules and constraints that may be used to output a map that meets certain criteria in order to be used as a spider map in transportation systems. We present results with real public transport network datasets, and discuss possible evaluation criteria. The present work introduces a new set of experimental validations that confirm the previous research but also leading to new open issues for future work.
- The perception of health providers about an artificial intelligence applied to Tuberculosis video-based treatment in Brazil: a protocol proposalPublication . Santos, Luiz Ricardo Albano dos; Bernardi, Filipe Andrade; Prado, Gabriela Cristina Silva; Lima, Vinicius Costa; Crepaldi, Nathalia Yukie; Marçal, Matheus Angerami; Galliez, Rafael Mello; Ruffino-Netto, Antonio; Alves, Domingos; Rijo, Rui Pedro Charters LopesTuberculosis (TB) is an infectious-contagious disease that affects mainly the lungs, ranking in the 10 main causes of death in the world. Non-adherence or non-treatment of TB may prolong transmissibility, increase the risk of drug resistance and lead to patient death. One step forward is the use of smartphones for monitoring the medication intake via video (VDOT). VDOT is a more acceptable and cost-effective option than the traditional DOT (in person). However, the VDOT system requires a professional (verifying agent) to check all medication intake daily. Based on an initiative that aims to replace the verifying agent with an artificial intelligence tool capable of validating it automatically through computer vision techniques (AI-based VDOT), the main goal of this work is to measure the acceptance and perception of Brazilian health professionals on the AI-Based VDOT before implementing this technology by using a quantitative questionnaire as instrument. To achieve this, we have developed a proposal of study protocol that describes the steps to create, apply and validate this research
- The process of outpatient care of children and adolescents in a tertiary‐level hospital specializing in pediatrics: A case study focused on identifying opportunities for improvement with the aid of modeling using BPMNPublication . Vinci, André Luiz Teixeira; Barbosa, Francisco; Silvia Inês Dallavalle de Pádua; Rijo, Rui Pedro Charters Lopes; Alves, DomingosIntroduction Business process management has gained importance in organizations for providing improved productivity and cost reduction, with process modeling being the central role. Usually, with reduced resources, the health area can benefit from good management of its processes. Objective To identify proposals for improvements in the process of outpatient care of children and adolescents in a tertiary-level—the most specialized and complex—pediatric hospital. Methods A bibliographic survey on the subject and a case study with in loco observation of the processes with semistructured interviews with the professionals involved were carried out. Alpha Hospital was chosen for this study, and the modeling of the process was performed using Business Process Model and Notation. Results Twelve relevant articles were identified. The “AS-IS” model of the process was obtained as a result and presents the existing 4 subprocesses (patient reception, preconsultation, consultation, and postconsultation). Specifically, the following improvement opportunities were identified: (a) process monitoring through indicators; (b) adequacy of the information system; (c) creation of service evaluation mechanisms; and (d) definition and application of training sessions for whenever a new professional begins working in a specific sector. The problem with the waiting time for patient care was also identified, but with no obvious solution; further studies should be carried to solve the problem. Conclusion The use of the business process modeling approach and process analysis allowed the hospital team awareness of the process and the identification of an improved set that can be helpful to Alpha Hospital or be used by other hospitals.
- Proposal for selection of mental health indicators in the management of health networks: from heuristic to process modelingPublication . Lima, Inacia Bezerra de; Yamada, Diego Bettiol; Yoshiura, Vinicius Tohoru; Lance, Rogério Cortecioni; Rodrigues, Lidia Maria Lourençön; Vinci, Andre Luiz Teixeira; Martinho, Ricardo; Pádua, Silvia Dallavalle de; Rijo, Rui Pedro Charters Lopes; Rijo, Rui Pedro Charters Lopes; Furegato, Antonia Regina Ferreira; Alves, DomingosIn 2011, Brazil instituted the Psychosocial Care Network (RAPS) for people suffering from mental disorders and needs arising from the use of alcohol and other drugs within the Unified Health System an electronic information system that supports the planning, regulation, control and evaluation of mental health actions. Several studies have been done to select a complete set of indicators for mental health in Brazil; however, these studies do not describe how these principles are transposed into indicators. In this work we will use Business Process Management Notation (BPMN) to analyze the process of patient care in a mental health unit and to search through this analysis to select and map those that apply to the specific RAPS institutions. We propose a method, using process modeling along the Thornicroft and Tansella matrix, to select the relevant indicators and their mapping along the network. The method was effective allowing the application of indicators to the concrete reality of a psychiatric hospital in Brazil.
- Proposal of an integrated decision support system for Tuberculosis based on Semantic WebPublication . Lima, Vinícius; Pellison, Felipe; Bernardi, Filipe; Carvalho, Isabelle; Alves, Domingos; Rijo, Rui Pedro Charters LopesEpidemiological surveillance of Tuberculosis (TB) requires a strong integration of different health services, programs and levels of care. The deepening and broadening of data management techniques must be constantly carried out to increase the integrality of healthcare. Otherwise, knowledge extraction and clinical and administrative decision-making processes are significantly hampered, directly affecting the management and quality of health services. Thus, this work aims to establish a computerized decision support system capable of collecting, integrating and sharing TB health data in Brazilian Unified Public Health System. Also, it will allow the monitoring of infected patients and the visualization of consolidated information of regular TB and its resistant variants for health professionals and managers. The data will be made available from heterogeneous, disconnected and unstructured sources by combining traditional web services, Semantic Web resources and security algorithms. A solid knowledge base applied to epidemiological surveillance, health information governance and clinical support will be enabled to integrate the multiple areas of TB patients care, as well as to support the creation of more accurate operational and diagnostics models
- Proposal of an ontology for Mental Health Management in BrazilPublication . Yamada, Diego Bettiol; Yoshiura, Vinicius Tohoru; Miyoshi, Newton Shydeo Brandão; Lima, Inácia Bezerra de; Shinoda, Gustavo Yukiu Usumoto; Rijo, Rui Pedro Charters Lopes; Marques, João Mazzoncini de Azevedo; Cruz-Cunha, Maria Manuela; Alves, DomingosMental illness represent a large part of public health problems worldwide. Additionally, mental health managers need to make decisions based on complex data from dispersed sources with low levels of standardization and integration. This generally hinders knowledge extraction and its use as a reference to provide useful indicators and reports for efficient decision making. In this context, the interoperability between Information Systems is an essential characteristic to establish the capacity of communication, exchange and reuse of information for the generation of knowledge. In order to reduce the data complexity and to assist in the data interpretation, Semantic Web technology can be used. It classifies the stored information with metadata and give them meaning and thematic through the use of ontologies. Therefore, given the importance of mental health and the need for quality data, this article aims to specify and develop an ontology capable of consuming, integrating, analyzing and making available data of a regional mental healthcare network.
- Recognition of human activity based on sparse data collected from smartphone sensorsPublication . Gordalina, Goncalo; Correia, Pedro; Pires, Gabriel; Oliveira, Luis; Figueiredo, Maria João; Martinho, Ricardo; Rijo, Rui Pedro Charters Lopes; Assunção, Pedro; Seco, Maria Alexandra Abreu Henriques; Fonseca-Pinto, RuiThis paper proposes a method of human activity monitoring based on the regular use of sparse acceleration data and GPS positioning collected during smartphone daily utilization. The application addresses, in particular, the elderly population with regular activity patterns associated with daily routines. The approach is based on the clustering of acceleration and GPS data to characterize the user’s pattern activity and localization for a given period. The current activity pattern is compared to the one obtained by the learned data patterns, generating alarms of abnormal activity and unusual location. The obtained results allow to consider that the usage of the proposed method in real environments can be beneficial for activity monitoring without using complex sensor networks.
