- Evaluation of Adolescent Swimmers Through a 30-s Tethered TestPublication . Morouço, Pedro G.; Vilas-Boas, João P.; Fernandes, Ricardo J.Our purpose was to demonstrate that 30-s tethered swimming test can be a useful tool to estimate swimming performance in short distance freestyle events. Thirteen high level adolescent swimmers (7 male and 6 female of16.6 ± 1.0 and 15.8 ± 0.8 years old) performed a 30-s maximum effort in front crawl tethered swimming. Afterward, subjects completed 50-m and 100-m freestyle events at the National Championships. Both maximum and mean force values obtained in the tethered test related directly with 50-m (r =.78 and r =.72, p <.01, respectively) and 100-m freestyle velocities (r =.63 and r =.61, p <.05, respectively). Fatigue index did not present a significant relationship with any of the studied performance variables. However, a proposed parameter-fatigue slope-correlated with 50-m (r=-.75, p <.01), 100-m performances (r=-.57, p <.05) and with r[La-] (r=-.90, p <.01). It is concluded that, for adolescent swimmers, values obtained from 30-s tethered test are well related with swimming performance in sprint events. In addition, fatigue slope seems to be more associated with swimming performance in short distance events than fatigue index.
- Relationship between Postural Reeducation Technique During Sleep and Relaxation Technique in Sleep QualityPublication . Desouzart, Gustavo; Filgueiras, Ernesto; Matos, RuiThe common sense warn that the quality of our day depends on the quality of our previous night. Among the main factors contributing to a better sleep quality is the postural behavior during the sleep period. However, little or nothing is known about the actual influence of these behaviors on people sleep quality. This paper presents a study which aims to: i) Check if people can take on a new postural behavior during the sleep period after a training period aware of this behavior and; ii) Check if a postural recommendations can aims to induce positive changes in the perception on the indices of Sleep quality in young adults, according to ecological and environmental approach. A sample of 21560 observations, which corresponds to 595 hours of sleep hours of 24 young adults, 12 male military and 12 female undergraduate, participated in this study. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to measure the perception of sleep quality before and after six consecutive months of appliance of the Postural Intervention program. Results shown that the Postural reeducation group improved self-perception of sleep quality (from bad to good) and a significant difference between the periods of the study (p = 0.008), according to the Student's T-Test and, ideal posture while sleeping using the ideal placement and amount of pillows (1.34% to 81.48%). Findings of this study allow us to suggest to health care professionals, in particular the rehabilitation professionals, new strategies and solutions for ergonomic change in posture in bed and improve the sleep quality indices.
- Sexual education for university students and the community in a european project: study protocolPublication . Soto-Fernández, I.; Fernández-Cézar, R.; Frias, A. M. Aguiar; Dias, H.; Santiago, C.; Gradellini, C.; Aaberg, V.; García-López, V.; Gómez-Cantarino, S.Background: The World Health Organisation (WHO) calls on stakeholders to give Higher Education a key educational importance for the future of Europe. Within the content of the training programmes at university, sexuality emerges as a relevant topic in the nursing degree, to promote integral health from a holistic perspective. However, research on the presence of sexuality at the curricular level in Higher Education suggests that it is incomplete and underdeveloped. Methods: This is a protocol for a long-term, multi-centre, exploratory, descriptive, and cross-sectional study with a quantitative and qualitative approach lasting two years. The research will be carried out in the educational community, including, on the one hand, students, and professors and health professionals of nursing programmes from five universities in different parts of the world (Portugal, Spain, Italy, and the United States), and on the other hand, women, young people, and immigrants from these communities. The study will have several target populations. Firstly, the target is nursing students, with whom the aim is to define their perspective on the sexuality content taught at the university, and their level of knowledge. Secondly university professors and health professionals, with whom we will check their perspective on sexuality in the classroom, as well as their level of knowledge in this field. And finally, we will work with the community (women, young people, and immigrants) to whom we will try to bring sexuality from a useful and enjoyable perspective. In order to measure these variables in the protocol, instruments such as questionnaires and semi-structured interviews will be used. During data collection, ethical principles will be guaranteed and informed consent will be requested from the participants. Discussion: The results of the research will have a high curricular impact on the educational community, and will last over time, since the tools generated in the project will be included as part of nursing training programmes. In addition, participation in the project will improve health education for health professionals and at the community level on sexuality in both urban and rural populations.
