- Cerâmica Bisarro: a tradição da Soenga e a proposta de um produto eco inovadorPublication . Fernandes, Marta; Frade, José Manuel Couceiro Barosa CorreiaCom este artigo pretende-se dar a conhecer a cerâmica tradicional do Norte de Portugal, o barro preto, que é acompanhado pela técnica ancestral de cozedura denominada Soenga que torna este processo muito mais sustentável do que o processo cerâmico que estamos habituados a conhecer. Assim sendo apresenta-se neste artigo a empresa Bisarro, que mantém as técnicas de cozedura ancestrais utilizando-as para modernizar, reinventar e redesenhar peças de cerâmica utilitária aplicando-as ao mercado cerâmico atual, mantendo a consciência e questões sustentáveis muito bem resolvidas. Com a pesquisa obtida propõe-se o desenvolvimento de um projeto integrado nesta empresa e nos seus princípios, de modo a aumentar a sua diversificação de produto reforçando o caráter tecnológico dos seus produtos.
- Co-designing a Care Plan Guide App to Support Early Conversations About End-of-Life Care in DementiaPublication . Neves, S.; Macdonald, A.; McLellan, E.; Poole, M.; Harrison-Dening, K.; Tucker, S.; Bamford, C.; Robinson, L.Talking about death and end-of-life care (EoLC) can be a sensitive topic for people affected by dementia and their families. However, recent research [1] has identified the need for people living with dementia (PLwD) to start planning timely discussions about their future care to help their family and professional carers to confidently make decisions on their behalf when they are no longer able to do so themselves [2]. This paper describes a five-stage iterative co-design approach aimed at understanding the type and nature of these sensitive discussions and developing a resource to support PLwD, their families and carers. The resource took the form of a Care Plan Guide app, as a tool to help initiate early discussions about anticipatory care planning [3] in dementia for PLwD to ensure good personalized care and that important wishes were honoured. The paper highlights the importance of the involvement and active collaboration of families living with the illness. It discusses lessons learned, reflections and recommendations for approaching co-designing healthcare digital resources for sensitive EoLC issues that may have wider applications than for PLwD.
- Cohort Study Good Practices: Design Communication and Capacitation ProcessesPublication . Ferreira, Elga; Penedos-Santiago, Eliana; Netto-Rocha, Constança; Faria-Marques, Daniela; Santos, Estêvão Soares; Dias, Sara SimõesIn the county of Leiria, Portugal, part of the population is known to have morbidity diagnoses (metabolic illnesses and more) and poor health habits on a big enough scale to bring the idea of how low health literacy can affect people’s lives and health services, such as a flood of the emergency systems caused by people attending the emergency room with minor issues. To address it, institutions in Leiria such as the City Hall, ACES Pinhal Litoral (Regional Primary Care Unit Headquarters) and Polytechnic of Leiria decided to conduct a longitudinal and prospective cohort study, where a sample of the population will be followed throughout time to understand if their choices regarding health and sustainable habits are indeed affected by their health literacy levels. This project will contribute to the initial stage of this cohort study, by developing a recognizable brand, whose identity can be maintained throughout all its communication and dissemination media, so that the population can identify, without equivocation, the cohort study to which it refers, and awaken their curiosity to participate. This stage also includes the presentation and dissemination of the cohort study itself to the population under study, followed by a randomized inquiry done by pre-selected interviewers. This project relies on Service Design and Participatory Design methodologies to streamline the development of the study’s elements and to solve common cohort issues, such as: 1) gathering a suitable number of participants that can represent the population; 2) follow-up maintenance of participants; 3) keeping the interviewers and participants engaged with the study, after the first contact. Informal interviews and user group definition will help the comprehension of the study and allow to create personas to characterize the interviewers of the cohort study. These aforementioned methodologies will be supported by the workshop methodology under Participatory Design, acting as a testing ground for the previously developed processes, preparing interviewers to adapt their communication when facing people from different generations, education, and social backgrounds. By carrying out this project simultaneously with the cohort study, it’s possible to evaluate, over time, how the design methodologies can empower and facilitate communication and intervene, changing tactics in case it’s needed. The creation of a replicable experience is proposed allowing the betterment of the overall health of the population. Additionally, assuming the lack of information on how the preparatory phases of cohort studies are designed, it’s also envisaged the creation of guidelines and a good practice manual. It is also of great importance to point out the bridge established between the health and design fields, where design becomes the interface between science and the public.
- Depression to expression: color as visual language to communicate complex emotionsPublication . Puja, Kumar; Lobo, CarlaThis aim of this study is to explore the potency of graphic design as an opportunity to communicate complex emotions and depression using color as a design strategy. The distinctive color identity is formulated by adopting a three-step methodological approach. Firstly, an online survey was conducted focused on understanding individual’s color preferences and color-emotion associations. The survey analysis helped to derive the color identity for six basic emotions. Secondly, mind-mapping of symptoms of each depression type was done to branch out the basic emotions involved and thus, derive its first color-emotion derivative. Next, the value-saturation scale was redefined wherein value represented the intensity of emotion and saturation represented the severity of depression. Lastly, the color symbolism of that particular emotion in Indian culture was cross-referenced and thus, giving the second derivatives. This combination of first and second derivatives give the resultant unique color identities for eleven types of depression solely based on the emotional dimension of color. It was aimed to further explore the innumerable possibilities that can be achieved by experimenting with variation of color attributes. Hence, the research work proposed a methodology, which is in the initial development phase, to define the complex emotional experiences of depression through visual communication.
- Design e mediação de relações com o mundo vivo: Microalgas como solução para melhorar a qualidade do ar urbanoPublication . Carreira, Rute; Borges, Afonso; Fernandes, Isabel Barreto; Calado, António JoséDesde a Revolução Industrial, têm sido continuamente registados novos picos anuais dos níveis de CO2 e outros contaminantes na atmosfera terrestre, que tem consequencias sobre o meio ambiente e na saúde humana. Através do potencial presente em espécies de microalgas, é possível sequestrar estes compostos, contribuindo para o processo de biorremediação ambiental. A partir desta premissa, a expansão das fronteiras de atuação do design à esfera das ciências biológicas, tem inspirado o desenvolvimento de novos projetos que visam dar resposta aos desafios da atualidade. Este artigo consiste na analise de duas soluções que têm por base a relação design-biologia, em particular na produção de microalgas, para promover a qualidade do ar em dois contextos urbanos distintos: uma num ambiente laboral - Biobuilding, instalado na sede da Nestlé, Portugal; outro que consiste numa peça de mobiliário urbano - LIQUID3, instalado na cidade de Belgrado. Através desta cooperação disciplinar, é esperado não só contribuir pra o desenvolvimento de soluções que promovem a melhoria da qualidade de vida dos habitantes das cidades, como contribuir para o conhecimento em design através da mediação de relações com o mundo vivo, inovando a nível: social, ambiental, tecnológico e económico.
- Designing for a Multispecies House-hold Development of Pet ́s HabitatsPublication . Venâncio, Clara; Pessanha, LuísThis article makes a brief presentation of the development process of two prototypes that foster the environmental enrichment of two species of companion animals: guinea pigs and cats. The prototypes Domus Petra and Locus Turi were the results of a research project carried out within the scope of a master's thesis in product design. The main goal of the project is to research how product design can promote animal welfare, health and, also, human wellbeing. There were identified cats and guinea pigs’ main characteristics and needs, as well as the problems of the spaces they inhabit when integrated into multispecies households. The animal’s artificial habitats were re-evaluated and redesigned to encourage the practice of normal species behaviours. The focus lays on the relationship dynamics between humans and companion animals: their practices of care; feeding; maintenance of animals and their products; ways of living together; and human-animal-objects interactions. The Domus Petra and Locus Turi prototypes seem to be usable by animals and humans, however, future improvements and developments should be considered. There is a need to explore other approaches to non-anthropocentric design practices, and other paths to include animal perspectives in product development.
- Exercício sobre a (i)legibilidade da letra: Desenvolvimento de uma metodologia para a construção de tipos de letras reducionistasPublication . Morgado, Aprigio; Figueiredo, JoãoA presente investigação, fundamentada em estudos académicos de legibilidade nas áreas do Design de Tipografia e da Psicologia tem como objetivo o desenvolvimento de uma metodologia para a exploração de tipos funcionais que questionem a legibilidade das formas convencionais das letras, reduzindo-as aos seus traços elementares de reconhecimento. Para o efeito foi construído um modelo tipográfico em caixa baixa e desenvolvido um teste de legibilidade para compreender qual a informação mínima necessária para identificar cada letra do modelo. Os estímulos para teste envolveram a criação de 26 máscaras animadas, aplicadas respetivamente a cada caracter do alfabeto. Os resultados dos testes efetuados a 25 indivíduos são apresentados mediante uma família tipográfica que surge aqui como um instrumento de visualização de dados, representando a quantidade mínima de informação necessária para 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90% e 100% dos observadores identificarem cada letra. A análise dos resultados demonstrou que a identificação das letras carece de uma quantidade substancial de área desenhada, sugerindo que esta depende de mais componentes do que seria, à priori expectável. Não obstante, as interseções, terminações, curvas abertas para cima e verticais demonstraram ser as componentes mais relevantes no reconhecimento dos caracteres da caixa-baixa.
- Exploração de novas texturas em produtos cerâmicos a partir de experiências com materiais orgânicosPublication . Godinho, Ana Rute Saraiva; Kersanach, Bianca Bolina; Almeida, João Vitor Rodrigues de Castro; Frade, JoséFoi experimentada a utilização de materiais orgânicos mergulhados em barbotinas de faiança e de barro vermelho no processo de criação de novas estruturas e texturas de produtos cerâmicos. O projeto dividiu-se em duas partes, começando pela investigação e análise de materiais orgânicos, escolhidos de acordo com as suas características organolépticas, com o propósito de introduzir novas texturas em peças cerâmicas. Obteu-se uma lista e selecionou-se um conjunto de materiais orgânicos que mais se adequam ao projeto, realizando estudos preliminares em pequenas amostras cerâmicas no sentido de percebermos o potencial de cada um dos materiais orgânicos selecionados na alteração de estruturas e texturas cerâmicas. A segunda parte deste trabalho relaciona-se com a aplicação dos melhores resultados obtidos nos estudos preliminares sobre três novos projetos de produtos cerâmicos.
- Expression of Biophilia on Ceramic Forms Through the Seed Image. Biophilic Ceramics; Carrying Nature into the Interior with Seed FormPublication . Salman, Canan; Korkmaz, Deniz; Lobo, CarlaReusing forgotten values in design promotes creativity, sustainability and a deep respect for the rich culturel heritages. It allows designers to find beauty and inspiration in overlooked and forgotten elements. By breathing new life into forgotten elements, restoring creativity, sustainability and overlooked aspects of our cultural heritage, designers can bridge the past and present. Biophilia, a design concept that integrates the benefits of nature into interiors, is an example of this approach. It also shows its presence in the field of biophilic art. This article describes the process of transformation into designs that allow us to apply our ancient agricultural habits to ceramic forms, and the concept of biophilia and its application in ceramic art to promote sustainability and connection with nature. The seed forms were used as inspiration to create ceramic structures that allow people to grow micro greens and herbs indoors.
- GESTO E PODER: REEL/UNREEL, DE FRANCIS ALŸSPublication . Ferreira, CéliaTomamos como objeto a obra do artista Francis Alÿs, em especial o vídeo Reel/ Unreel (Cabul, Afeganistão, 2011, 19:32min.), para ensaiar uma reflexão sobre gestos quotidianos, inscrição e biopoder. Em Reel/Unreel um grupo de crianças brinca guiando bobinas de filme por um percurso acidentado, entre as ruas de Cabul. Édocumental/ficcional o gesto com que o artista regista/imagina – em que conduz e é conduzido pelas brincadeiras das crianças – a cidade e o cinema. O jogo infantil envolvendo, ou não, um grupo, aparece em estreita relação com gestos ancestrais: esconder, arrastar, puxar, correr, esquivar-se, imobilizar. Esses gestos executados em circunstâncias variadas, são repetidos em diferentes trabalhos de Francis Alÿs e sugerem modos de inscrição no quotidiano, afirmando a sua presença numa linha, num som, num rumor. Na obra de Alÿs concretiza-se um arquivo de gestos banais em relação com poderes que perpassam cidades como Cabul, Londres ou a Cidade do México. O gesto do artista, ou das crianças, ou dos cidadãos implicados na obra, retornam na sua simplicidade em espaços e tempos que os ressignificam e possuem uma dimensão estética que interessa compreender na sua articulação ética e (bio)política.
