The megalithic presences, the parietal paintings and engravings or the stacked stones that we find in esoteric places bear witness to the civilizational propensity to mark out the landscape. Municipalities build viewpoints and walkways to access the landscape, gradually artificializing the relationship with the natural. The Sino-Japanese contemplation stones, Richard Long's interior pieces or Eliasson's environmentalist Ice Watch intervention problematize the use of landscape as an artistic theme based on the collection of natural samples. On the other hand, the permanent interventions by Robert Smithson, Michael Heizer and Nancy Holt irreparably alter the landscape. Even when Robert Morris or James Turrell propose to reveal the landscape, they are radically transforming it. At a time of heightened environmental concern, does it still make sense to continue occupying and transforming the landscape with artistic interventions? How much longer can the landscape withstand our plundering and transformation?
