- Assessing the Carbon Footprint of Meals: A Case Study from a Portuguese College CanteenPublication . Guimarães, Carla; Caseiro, B.; Bento, B.; Costa, C.; Moskalenko, D.; Manuel, E.; Neto, I.; Simões, J.; Chinita, M.; Henriques, R.; Ferreira, S.; Barroso de Moura Cipreste Vaz, Daniela; Pereira, Cidália Almeida; Santos Ribeiro, VâniaInstitutional food services, such as school canteens, significantly contribute to the environmental impact of food systems due to the high volume of meals served and their influence on dietary habits, particularly among younger populations. This study assessed the carbon footprint (CF) of all the dishes on the menu offered by a college canteen in central Portugal, including meat, fish/seafood, and vegan options. Nutritional adequacy was also evaluated, defined as the percentage of dishes meeting established nutritional guidelines. The findings revealed that meat-based dishes had the highest CF, followed by fish/seafood options, while vegan dishes exhibited the lowest environmental impact. In terms of nutritional adequacy, meat and fish/seafood dishes frequently exceeded recommended levels of protein and lipids, making them the least nutritionally balanced. These results indicate that reducing animal-based protein sources in institutional menus could effectively lower carbon emissions while enhancing nutritional quality. Promoting plant-based alternatives and adjusting portion sizes of meat and fish can support both environmental sustainability and public health objectives.
- Physiotherapy education and game-based learning: developing the SPINE frameworkPublication . Bernardo, Diana Filipa Salvador; Paquete, Manuel Joaquim da Silva P. G.; Rosa, Marlene Cristina NevesInnovative pedagogical approaches are increasingly essential in physiotherapy education to foster engagement and competency development. This multicenter cross-sectional study explored physiotherapy students’ perceptions of game-based learning (GBL) across six Portuguese higher education institutions. A total of 208 students completed a structured questionnaire assessing attitudes toward GBL in teaching–learning contexts and competency development. Results indicated generally positive perceptions of GBL, emphasizing its value for motivation, engagement, and integration of theoretical and practical learning. Transversal competencies—such as teamwork, communication, and empathy—were consistently recognized across academic years, while perceived benefits for technical skills increased with clinical exposure. Female students and those with prior health-related experience reported more favorable attitudes. However, students also highlighted limited curricular implementation and the need for clearer alignment between game activities and learning objectives, suggesting barriers at the institutional and pedagogical levels. These insights point to a gap between students’ enthusiasm and current educational practices, underlining the importance of structured guidance for integrating GBL effectively. Building on these findings, the student-perceived integration for novel education (SPINE) framework is proposed as a decision-making model to guide the pedagogically grounded GBL in physiotherapy curricula, emphasizing evidence-informed, context-sensitive, and sustainable implementation.
- IoT in Greenhouse Supported by Climate Conditions Management PlatformPublication . Galvão, João; Neves, Filipe; Vieira, João; Rafael Simões; Ribeiro, Vânia; Costa, PauloThe system called iMeteo4all is a management platform for several physical variables, inherent to the control and management of climatic conditions inside structures, for the intensive production of plants called greenhouses and to be one contribution for agriculture 4.0. The objective of this work was to design and develop software for monitoring and managing the quality of the internal environment, through successive data collection/readings provided by a network of sensors and process automation for more efficient and sustainable agriculture. Different case studies of greenhouses whose production technologies are distinct, such as aquaponics and soil technologies were considered, in these controlled environment structures to produce plants (edible and non-edible). This platform requires an Internet address to perform the interface among a tablet, a cell phone, a computer and communication systems between a net of IoT (Internet of Things) sensors, which collect climatic variables inherent to growth and connected to several MCUs (Micro Controller Unit). Subsequently, managers and employees will be able to view and interact in real time, making more accurate decisions, depending on the climatic variations inside the greenhouse, increasing efficiency in several areas in greenhouses. It is possible to access the history of each sensor and configure automations according to the collected data. Access to data from this solution is secure through an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate applied to the public https address. If hardware failures exist, the system is prepared to be restored through regular backups in the cloud and internally, providing users with confidence and robustness in the constant use of this platform.
- Cardiovascular pharmacotherapy in 2025Publication . Tamargo, Juan; Agewall, Stefan; Ambrosio, Giuseppe; Borghi, Claudio; Cerbai, Elisabetta; Dan, Gheorghe A; Drexel, Heinz; Ferdinandy, Péter; Grove, Erik Lerkevang; Klingenberg, Roland; Morais, João; Parker, William; Rocca, Bianca; Sulzgruber, Patrick; Semb, Anne Grete; Sossalla, Samuel; Kaski, Juan Carlos; Dobrev, DobromirDespite recent advances in cardiovascular pharmacotherapy, prevention and treatment of many cardiovascular diseases remain limited with a clear need for more effective and safer pharmacological strategies. Here, we summarize the most relevant advances in cardiovascular pharmacotherapy in 2025, including the approval of four new drugs (aficamten, etripamil, lerodalcibep, and plozasiran), the label expansions for five already approved drugs, and the results of major randomized clinical trials with already approved drugs, including those that met the prespecified primary endpoints (positive trials) representing new pharmacological options for cardiovascular diseases, those with neutral or negative results, which did not confirm the primary endpoints and the withdrawal from the US market of Andexanet-alfa for safety concerns. Finally, we present the most promising experimental cardiovascular drugs currently being investigated in ongoing Phase 2 and 3 clinical trials.

- The Impact of Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting on Respiratory Function: A Systematic ReviewPublication . Flores, Gonçalo; Duarte-Mendes, Pedro; Fonseca, Hélder; Monteiro, Diogo; Silva, Fernanda M.; Couto, Nuno; Silva, Ana Maria; Vilas-Boas, João PauloBackground: Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of mortality and morbidity in Portugal, with coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) being one of the most performed surgeries in cardiothoracic centers. After cardiac surgery, patients often experience a decrease in physical capacity, which results in an increased risk of mortality or hospitalization expenditures. The objective of this systematic review was to characterize changes in respiratory function in patients undergoing CABG. Methods: This systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis. Web of Science, Pubmed, SCOPUS, and Sport Discus were searched using a predefined research strategy to identify relevant original studies published until August 2025. To be included, studies must have assessed adult patients submitted to CABG who evaluated the respiratory function before and after cardiac surgery. Studies that reported other types of cardiac surgery were excluded. The Risk of Bias in Non-randomized Studies-of-Exposure and the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials were used to analyze the risk of bias of the selected studies. Results: After screening 1184 potential articles, six studies met the inclusion criteria. The studies included participants who underwent CABG (n = 324), with a mean age ranging from 54.05 ± 13.6 to 67 ± 10 years. Conclusions: All included studies reported significant postoperative reductions in respiratory function following CABG, including forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume in one second, maximal inspiratory pressure, and maximal expiratory pressure. Although these findings consistently indicate a decline in pulmonary function, the limited number of available studies limits the strength of the conclusions. This systematic review suggests that monitoring respiratory impairments after CABG may be clinically relevant to improve health-related quality of life.
- Effects of Gameful Experience on Consumer Brand Responses: The case of Vans WorldPublication . Pipa, Raquel Simão da Câmara; Ferreira, Alcina Teresa GasparPurpose: The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the role of gameful experience in shaping consumer brand responses, within the context of marketing and branded interactive experiences. As brands increasingly seek alternative ways to engage consumers, this study examines how experiential qualities associated with games can be applied to brand–consumer interactions. Objectives: This dissertation aims to: (1) conceptualise gameful experience by integrating insights from game studies, psychology, and marketing literature; (2) analyse the key dimensions of gameful experience as proposed in the Gameful Experience (GAMEX) framework; and (3) examine how these dimensions manifest within a branded game context, using a game developed by the brand Vans as a case study. Methodology: Methodologically, this study adopts an exploratory qualitative approach, combining a bibliographic review with a case study of a branded game developed by Vans. Results: The results reveal that player motivation is strongly shaped by exploratory gameplay elements, particularly autonomy, discovery, and environmental storytelling. Explorer-type players exhibited higher levels of engagement when game mechanics supported open-ended interaction and self-directed progression. Furthermore, the findings demonstrate that gameful experiences—especially enjoyment, absorption, creative thinking, and activation—are positively associated with consumer brand responses, including increased engagement, more favourable brand attitudes, and stronger emotional connections with the brand. Overall, the integration of exploration-driven design strategies emerges as a key factor in enhancing both player experience and sustained consumer–brand engagement.
- Effectiveness of Group Narrative Therapy Based on a Postmodern Psychotherapeutic Approach for Reducing Test Anxiety in Secondary School StudentsPublication . Peker, Adem; Cengiz, Serkan; Laranjeira, Carlos; Yıldırım, Murat; Di Malta, GinaObjective This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a narrative therapy (NT)–based psychoeducation programme in reducing test anxiety among eighth-grade students in Türkiye. Methods Using a quasi-experimental design and purposive sampling, 22 students (63.6% female) were assigned to either an experimental or control group (11 each). Participants completed the Turkish version of The Test Anxiety Scale (EXS). The six-week NT-based programme was applied to the experimental group. Data were analysed using single-factor ANCOVA. Findings The results showed that the test anxiety levels of the students in the experimental group were significantly lower than those in the control group (F = 6.23; p < 0.05). Discussion Research findings have shown that NT training programmes are effective in reducing test anxiety. These results suggest that incorporating NT principles and strategies can serve as an effective approach to addressing and alleviating test anxiety in students.
